Macron on the EU-Mercosur agreement: "I am optimistic, but vigilant."

French President Emmanuel Macron expressed optimism regarding the trade agreement between the European Union and Mercosur, but stressed the need to protect French farmers. During a speech at the Leaders' Summit, an event linked to COP30, Macron emphasized that France had requested specific measures from the European Commission to guarantee the security of the agricultural sector.
According to Macron, the agreement presents positive aspects for various sectors and represents an opportunity for geopolitical diversification for both blocs. However, he warned that certain segments, especially agriculture , could be harmed without the necessary safeguards.
Negotiations are ongoing.The security clauses requested by France are currently under discussion between the European Commission and the Mercosur members . Macron stressed that his final approval of the agreement is conditional on the effective implementation of these protection measures.
The French leader maintains a stance of "vigilant optimism" regarding the negotiations. "I have high hopes, but I'm still keeping a watchful eye," Macron declared, emphasizing that French support for the agreement will depend on guarantees that the country's interests are respected in the negotiations led by the European Commission.
